El español se explica: reflexivo, recíproco, pasivo e impersonal
Distinguir los usos principales del se en español por la estructura de la oración en lugar de intentar forzar una traducción al inglés.
Spanish se is not one meaning. It can mark reflexive or reciprocal reference, replace le/les, form impersonal and passive constructions, or belong to a verb.
Usos del participante
In Ana se lava, Ana acts on herself; in Se ayudan, people may help each other. Context identifies reflexive versus reciprocal meaning. With two object pronouns, le/les becomes se: Se lo expliqué.
Patrones impersonales y pasivos
Se vive bien aquí presents an unspecified human subject and keeps the verb singular. In Se venden pisos, the plural noun controls agreement in a passive-like construction. Testing agreement helps distinguish the patterns.
Verbos léxicos y de cambio de estado
Some verbs are learned with se: quejarse de, darse cuenta de, atreverse a. Others shift meaning or viewpoint: ir/irse, dormir/dormirse. Store the construction and its preposition as one lexical unit.
